Location scouting days are always an adventure — but throw in a 90-degree June day, a camera bag, and my amazing mom, and you’ve got a whole journey worth sharing!
We started our morning bright and early at South Platte Park, where I captured some promo shots for upcoming sessions. It’s a peaceful spot with open skies, greenery, and lots of potential. Right after, we wandered across the way to explore Carson Nature Center — and wow, was it hot. With little to no shade and full sun at noon, I quickly realized that while it’s stunning in terms of scenery, this spot is best saved for sunset sessions when the light is golden and much more forgiving. Midday in June? I’ll pass!
Next, we made our way to Arrowhead Golf Course, where the striking red rock formations took our breath away. It’s a visually incredible place and definitely a dream backdrop for the right couple or family — but the steep uphill climbs made it a challenge on a hot day. Definitely not the most accessible location, but worth it if you’re up for the hike.
After a quick lunch break (bless my mom for powering through with me!), we stopped at our final destination: McCabe Meadows Park. My mom did a quick outfit change, we grabbed more promo shots, and instantly agreed — this is the one. Wide open fields, a peaceful trail, and golden hour potential for days. We wrapped up around 3PM so I could get ready for a lovely session at 5:30 with a beautiful client visiting from Kentucky. By the time I got home, I was dealing with a full case of heat exhaustion. Lesson learned: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate — especially in the summer heat. The things we do for the perfect photo!
