Tips from a Colorado Newborn Photographer for a Calm, Cozy Experience

Your baby is finally here, and those early days—though a little sleepy and chaotic—are incredibly special. If you’ve booked an in-home newborn photography session, congratulations! You’re about to document one of the most meaningful chapters in your life.

As a Colorado lifestyle newborn photographer, I’ve worked with dozens of families capturing raw, emotional, and timeless images in the comfort of their homes. Whether you’re a first-time parent or a seasoned pro, here’s everything you need to know to prepare for a smooth, stress-free session.

Why In-Home Newborn Photography?

Unlike posed studio sessions, in-home newborn photography focuses on real connection, natural moments, and the cozy familiarity of your space. It’s perfect for:

New parents who want to stay home

Families with other children or pets

Anyone who prefers relaxed, storytelling-style images over stiff poses

At Ravens Grace Photography, I specialize in a warm, earthy, natural editing style that preserves the beauty of your baby just as they are; with soft skin, sleepy eyes, and all the little details that make this time so fleeting.

How to Prepare Your Home

Don’t panic! You don’t need a spotless house for beautiful photos!

Focus on these 3 areas:

Master Bedroom – Neutral bedding and soft light make for perfect family cuddle shots.

Living Room – Natural window light + comfy couches = relaxed, lifestyle images.

Nursery – I’ll capture meaningful details like baby’s name, crib, and favorite items.

Tips:

Open all curtains to let in natural light.

Clear clutter from visible surfaces (nightstands, end tables, etc.).

Turn off overhead lights to avoid mixed lighting (natural light is best!).

Bonus tip: set aside any sentimental items you’d like included, like heirloom blankets, name signs, or special toys.

How to Keep Baby Calm and Sleepy

The key to a successful newborn photo session at home is a happy, sleepy baby. While we follow baby’s lead the entire time, these tips can help set the stage for a peaceful shoot.

Baby-Soothing Tips:

Feed baby 20–30 minutes before the session so they’re full and drowsy.

Warm the room slightly (around 75°F) babies love to be toasty!

Use a white noise machine (or app) to mimic womb sounds and soothe fussiness.

Keep baby in a loose diaper or swaddle before I arrive, so we don’t wake them when changing.

Have pacifiers, extra diapers, wipes, and swaddles handy.

Even if baby is wide awake, that’s okay too! we’ll capture their personality exactly as it is that day. My sessions are completely baby-led, so we take breaks for feeding, changing, or soothing as needed.

What to Expect from Your Newborn Session

My in-home newborn sessions are relaxed, unhurried, and deeply personal. Here’s what you can expect:

The Flow:

Sessions typically last 1.5 to 2 hours

I gently direct and guide you, but nothing is overly posed

We pause as needed, no pressure or timelines

What We’ll Capture:

Baby alone (swaddled, on the bed, in crib)

Parents holding and interacting with baby

Siblings cuddling baby

Detail shots (fingers, toes, lashes, lips)

Family snuggles in natural light

I focus on connection over perfection. The magic is in those quiet, in-between moments where you’re simply loving on your baby.

What to Wear for In-Home Newborn Photos

You don’t need to go shopping, just keep it simple and neutral.

Recommended Color Palette:

Cream, tan, beige, white, soft olive, dusty rose, muted blues

Avoid bold patterns, neon colors, or logos

Suggestions:

Moms: Flowy dresses, cozy sweaters, or neutral loungewear

Dads: Plain tee or henley with jeans or joggers

Baby: Neutral swaddles or simple onesie (white or soft tones work best)

Siblings: Coordinate in similar tones, barefoot is great for everyone!
